To meet growing demand, the company has launched new transport routes linking the Port of Tangier with Algeciras and Motril, and invested in 60 new container trailers designed to support intermodal operations. These trailers, capable of transporting 20-, 40- and 50-foot units, are expected to increase XPO’s annual transport capacity by over 6,000 movements, according to the company.

XPO also reported it now carries out 400 duotrailer crossings per month via the Strait of Gibraltar, with 200 journeys in each direction.

The company’s operations in Morocco began in 2011 and currently serve industries including automotive, industrial, construction and retail. As part of its latest strategy, XPO plans to route between 35% and 40% of its Europe–Morocco traffic through the Port of Motril by 2025.

The shift to Motril is expected to cut CO₂ emissions by approximately 10%, though no detailed methodology for this figure was provided.

“The expansion of our operations in Morocco – with more than 30,000 shipments as of 2024 and new investments – reflects our commitment to increasingly efficient, innovative and sustainable cross-border logistics,” said Massimo Marsili, Managing Director for Southern Europe and Morocco at XPO Logistics.

The newly acquired trailers are also equipped with GPS tracking systems, enabling real-time monitoring of goods.

XPO’s expansion in North Africa comes as Morocco positions itself as a key logistics hub connecting Europe with West Africa. The Port of Tangier Med has seen steady growth in recent years, supported by industrial development and investment in infrastructure.
