In the smaller terminals, the transshipment of goods will continue as usual for the time being.
“Shipping traffic has virtually come to a standstill,” a spokesperson was quoted as saying. The spokesperson stressed that this was standard procedure for wind force 8 and above.
“The large ships stay outside and there is less transshipment, but the port is still accessible,” said the spokesperson, who added that there have hardly been any incidents so far, apart from a few barges that became loose at Waalhaven.”
The measures will remain in force until the wind calms down again.
There have also been problems at ports in the UK and France, as we reported earlier today.
Roads in the Netherlands have been affected too; on the A4 highway towards Amsterdam, a truck lost its roof to the wind.

Flights in and out of the country have been impacted by extreme weather conditions as well, with numerous KLM services cancelled.
