The first ever remote checks in Belgium were conducted on the E40 in Wetteren on Thursday. Officers say the efficiency of the system led to the detection of a large number of violations.

According to the Belgian Police, the inspection in Wetteren saw police use a remote tachograph checking device linked to a smartphone. The device sent colour-code signals to the phone to indicate whether a truck’s tachograph record is in order.
Trucks that were red-flagged by the remote tachograph inspecting tech could then be pulled over for a more thorough check.
As part of the inspection on Thursday, as many as 128 trucks and buses were subject to roadside checks.
From those, 25 violations were found. This included 20 tachograph or drivers’ hours violations, plus 3 violations regarding the Mobility Package return obligation for foreign trucks, as well as 2 violations concerning the return for foreign drivers.
