7.5-tonne weight limit imposed on Freeport Elbe Bridge

Effective Thursday, September 26, the Freeport Elbe Bridge in Hamburg will be closed to vehicles exceeding 7.5 tonnes in weight. The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) announced this measure to reduce the strain on the bridge, which is in a deteriorating condition.

The bridge, built in 1926, requires both significant repairs and partial reconstruction. A static assessment, prompted by the postponement of planned renovations, led to the decision to restrict heavy traffic.

Vehicles above the weight limit will be redirected to the New Elbe Bridge, accessible via Veddeler Marktplatz and Zweibrückenstraße. Signage for the weight restriction will be installed in the area on the same day the measure takes effect.

The Freeport Elbe Bridge was last in the news in January 2022, when it was damaged by a collision with a dredging vessel, which resulted in a four-month closure for repairs.

The HPA has not yet provided further details on the timeline for the planned renovations.
