The carrier has contracted HD Hyundai to build eight 13,400-TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships in a deal worth 1.456 billion USD, the shipbuilder announced.
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), HD Hyundai’s shipbuilding holding company, confirmed that it has signed a shipbuilding contract with HMM for the construction of eight ultra-large container vessels. According to the announcement, the deal represents HD Hyundai’s largest container-ship order volume since 2007.
The new ships will each have a capacity of 13,400 TEU and will be equipped with LNG dual-fuel engines. The vessels will measure 337 metres in length, 51 metres in width, and 27.9 metres in height. HD Hyundai added that the ships will feature a significantly enlarged fuel tank — around 50% larger — to improve operational efficiency.
Construction will be split between HD Hyundai’s shipyards:
- 2 vessels will be built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI)
- 6 vessels will be constructed by HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries
Deliveries are scheduled to begin gradually and continue through the first half of 2029.
In its announcement, HD Hyundai stated that the contract strengthens its position in the global container-ship market, noting the continued demand for high-efficiency and dual-fuel vessels.
HMM’s order follows its ongoing fleet renewal strategy, with the new vessels set to expand the carrier’s capacity once delivered.
