The Council of Ministers approved the basic regulations governing the introduction of tolls for trucks in the Netherlands. The fees will be collected at the earliest from 2023 and will cover both Dutch and foreign trucks.

The toll will apply for vehicles with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 3.5 t, reports the Dutch logistics portal logistiek.nl. „This controversial fee also applies to local and regional roads,” informs logistiek.nl. In this way, the government wants to prevent truck drivers from using alternative routes.

Toll rates similar to those in Germany and Belgium?

As the German industry portal verkehsrundschau.de reports, the toll rates will be modelled on the German and Belgian toll systems. The proceeds from tolls will allow reducing the tax on heavy goods vehicles. In part, they will also be used to develop sustainable and innovative solutions for freight transport.

The rules laid down by the government are to form the basis for the bill, on which the minister of transport Cora van Nieuwenhuizen, is currently working.
