Over the last month, Iraq has finalised all the formalities in order to join the TIR Convention as soon as possible. The Iraqi Government hopes that the ratification of the agreement will act as a catalyst for cross-border trade between Iraq and its six neighbours who have already acceded to the Convention.

Ratification of the TIR Convention has yet to be approved by the Iraqi Parliament. According to the International Road Transport Union, all other formalities have already been completed by Iraq.

Iraq’s accession to the TIR system will also contribute to the creation of new jobs related to road freight transport. In addition, it will help the country to consolidate its position in foreign trade after a long period of domestic unrest.
