This time it’s not the Austrians, but the Italians that are taking actions to limit the traffic through the Brenner Pass. The Italian motorway will soon be more expensive, and a traffic ban for heavy goods vehicles will be in force on an alternative national road.

Road tolls on the Italian motorway A22, which leads to the Brenner Pass will increase significantly before the end of November. That’s when a new road service contract will be signed.

We are one step away from signing the concession,” said Roberto Bizzo, president of the province of Bolzano for the Italian press agency „Opinione”.

As he emphasized, during the long and complex negotiations with the new manager, the region’s authorities emphasized the necessity to highlight the issue of environmental protection.

In connection with the above, the so-called environmental fee will be added to the rates on the Italian A22. The Italians hope that thanks to this, it will be possible to move some of the transport that runs on this route to the railway.

In order to prevent the more expensive A22 from being avoided, the South Tyrol authorities are preparing a ban on lorry traffic on the alternative SS12 national road.

Italian legislation provides for the possibility of provincial provisional bans for various reasons. In this case, the Italians will most likely be able to protect public health.

We will keep you updated on further details and fees.
