The trucks are operating under the UK Government-backed eFREIGHT 2030 project, part of the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme, which aims to accelerate the adoption of electric freight vehicles.
All five E-Tech T 4×2 vehicles are double-shifted daily and supported by charging infrastructure installed by Voltempo at the Welham Green site. The stores served include major branches such as Oxford Street and Bluewater. M&S is also exploring the potential for opportunity charging at store locations during vehicle stand time.
According to Renault Trucks, the E-Tech T model is powered by six 90 kWh batteries and three electric motors, delivering up to 490 kW of continuous power and 2,400 Nm of torque. Safety and operational features include urban visibility door windows, an anti-rollaway park brake, and aerodynamic upgrades fitted by Kuda.
Carlos Rodrigues, Managing Director of Renault Trucks UK and Ireland, said:
“This is not only a demonstration, but also proof that large-scale, emission-free transport is already here, and it works.”
M&S is one of the founding members of the eFREIGHT 2030 consortium, and the company has previously deployed three electric 26-tonne E-Tech D Wide rigids with refrigerated bodies, which have been in double-shift use for over a year.
A driver feedback event held at the Welham Green site highlighted improved comfort, reduced noise, and smoother handling as key benefits of the electric trucks, reinforcing their suitability for urban logistics.
The vehicles form part of M&S’s broader strategy to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
