According to a proposal by the Estonian climate minister, road tolls for lorries will depend on how environmentally friendly the vehicle is, reports local news portal Majandus.

In Estonia, lorries over 3.5 tonnes have to pay a time-based road toll. According to the new changes, more polluting and heavier trucks will have to pay higher tolls than less polluting vehicles. The daily toll will be between €4 and €40 and the annual toll between €200 and €2,000.

The amount of the toll depends on the gross weight of the truck and trailer, the EURO emission class and the number of axles.

The Estonian government has calculated that CO2 emissions will be reduced by 2.41 kilotonnes in the first year of the new measure.

The draft law has been submitted for consultation and transposes the European Parliament and Council Directive on the charging of vehicles for the use of certain infrastructures into Estonian law, the article adds.
