November truck bans across Europe: dates and routes to watch

You can read this article in 7 minutes

November brings further truck restrictions across Europe, with holiday-related bans affecting major transport markets. All Saints’ Day falls on Sunday 1 November, meaning holiday restrictions overlap with regular Sunday bans in several countries. Carriers must also plan around Independence Day in Poland, Armistice Day in France, public holidays in Czechia, Croatia and Romania, and stricter winter night restrictions on Austria’s A12 in Tyrol.

30 November (Monday) – St Andrew’s Day in Romania

Pay particular attention to DN1 (E60), including the sections between Otopeni, Ploiești and Brașov.

The ban does not automatically cover Romania’s entire road network. Before departure, check the detailed list of restricted sections and the applicable exemptions.

Austria: longer overnight ban on Tyrol’s A12 from 1 November

Separate from the holiday restrictions, the winter period for the overnight truck ban on the A12 Inntalautobahn in Tyrol begins on 1 November. The restriction is based on Austria’s air-quality protection regulations (IG-L).

Where does it apply? In both directions, between kilometre 6.35 near Langkampfen and kilometre 90 near Zirl.

Winter timetable (1 November to 30 April):

  • weekdays – 20:00–05:00,
  • Sundays and public holidays – 23:00–05:00.

During the summer period, the weekday ban starts at 22:00. This gives carriers two fewer hours to travel through the restricted section in winter.

Which vehicles are affected? The rules cover, among others, trucks, tractor units and self-propelled machinery above 7.5 tonnes, along with certain vehicle combinations exceeding that weight.

Exemptions: The ban does not apply to vehicles powered exclusively by electricity or hydrogen fuel cells. Exemptions also exist for certain consignments of perishable food, live-animal transport and urgent medical deliveries.

Euro VI vehicles may also qualify for an exemption when operating in designated regional areas, provided they meet detailed requirements covering emissions, vehicle markings and the loading or unloading location.

Vehicles powered by LNG or CNG are not automatically exempt solely because of their fuel type.
