October HGV bans on European roads: where and when they apply

In the upcoming month, apart from the regular weekend HGV movement restrictions, several European countries will also enforce holiday restrictions. Here is the schedule of October restrictions:

2 October (Thursday)

  • Luxembourg from 23:30 to 24:00, on roads leading towards Germany. Restrictions for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes (with or without trailers)

3 October (Friday, German Unity Day)

  • Austria – from 00:00 to 22:00. Ban on the A12 Inntalautobahn and A13 Brennerautobahn if the route leads to or through Germany. Applies to tractor units  with trailers over 3.5 tonnes, HGVs, and combinations exceeding 7.5 tonnes.
  • Luxembourg – from 00:00 to 21:45 on roads leading towards Germany.
  • Germany – from 00:00 to 22:00. Ban applies to trucks over 7.5 tonnes and combinations regardless of trailer weight.

22 October (Wednesday)

  • Hungary – from 22:00 to 24:00. Ban applies on Hungarian roads for trucks and combinations over 7.5 tonnes.

23 October (Thursday, Republic Day – Hungary)

  • Hungary – ban applies from 00:00 to 22:00.

26 October (Sunday, National Holiday – Austria)

  • Austria – movement restriction applies from 00:00 to 22:00.

28 October (Tuesday, Independence Day – Czech Republic)

  • Czechia – restriction from 13:00 to 22:00 applies to trucks and combinations over 7.5 tonnes.

31 October (Friday before All Saints’ Day)

  • Croatia – from 15:00 to 23:00. Applies to vehicles and combinations over 7.5 tonnes and trucks and vehicles with trailers exceeding 14 m in length.
  • France – from 22:00 to 24:00. During this time, trucks exceeding 7.5 tonnes cannot travel on French roads.
  • Luxembourg – bans apply: towards Germany from 23:30 to 24:00; towards France from 21:30 to 24:00.
  • Germany (Reformation Day) – from 00:00 to 22:00 in some states: Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia.
  • Poland – restriction from 18:00 to 22:00 applies to vehicles over 12 tonnes.
  • Slovenia – restriction from 8:00 to 22:00 for trucks and combinations over 7.5 tonnes.

1 November (Saturday, All Saints’ Day)

  • Austria – from 00:00 to 22:00.
  • Croatia – from 14:00 to 23:00.
  • France – from 00:00 to 24:00.
  • Luxembourg – from 00:00 to 21:45 and from 23:30 to 24:00 towards Germany and from 00:00 to 24:00 on roads towards France.
  • Germany – from 00:00 to 22:00, but only in states: Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland.
  • Poland – from 8:00 to 22:00.
  • Slovakia – from 00:00 to 22:00. The ban applies to trucks over 7.5 tonnes and combinations with trailers over 3.5 tonnes.
  • Slovenia – from 00:00 to 22:00.
  • Hungary – from 08:00 to 24:00.
  • Italy – from 09:00 to 22:00. Restrictions apply to vehicles and combinations over 7.5 tonnes.

Exceptions and Transit Rules in Germany

On 31 October (Reformation Day) and 1 November (All Saints’ Day), Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia apply  relaxed rules. In these regions, the ban starts only at 06:00, allowing freight transport operations between midnight and 6:00.

Furthermore, to facilitate transit, these states permit truck movement from 06:00 to 22:00 on certain motorway sections on holidays:

  • in Lower Saxony: A1, A2, A30, A31, and A33
  • in North Rhine-Westphalia: A1, A2, and A30
