The idea of using an underground parking lot as a reloading point is not new in Europe. The Germans decided to improve this concept a bit, thanks to which the parking lot will remain a parking lot, and logisticians will save on a fixed rental agreement.
In several European metropolises, attempts are being made to use multi-story car parks or underground parking lots as transshipment points in the city center. The most common basis for such use of the facility is the rental agreement. However, it is known that real estate in the city centers is not the cheapest, therefore, Germany as part of the Park-up project has modified this solution – reports the transport and logistics portal dvz.de.
Parking is for logistics only if needed
The pilot project provides for periodic parking use by logistics, i.e. only when needed. For the rest of the time, the facility is used by regular users as a parking lot.
As part of the project in May this year, the Gerber parking lot in Stuttgart will be launched. The Velo Carrier company wants to use their space for loading and unloading its freight bikes. Until then, displays will be installed to indicate that some parking spaces are reserved – even if there is no cargo bike on them. In addition, automatic barriers will prevent unauthorized persons from seizing the reserved spots.
