The French truck manufacturer is introducing a new DE13 R engine and a new generation of Optidriver gearboxes across its T, T High, C and K ranges. According to Renault Trucks, the powertrain update is designed to reduce fuel consumption, cut CO₂ emissions and improve vehicle performance and driving comfort.

The DE13 R engine will be available in versions of up to 540 hp, with maximum torque of 2,800 Nm from 900 rpm. Renault Trucks says the engine uses new materials, including high-strength grey cast iron and compacted graphite cast iron, to improve robustness and durability. The maximum cylinder pressure has also been increased to 250 bar, while an external high-pressure pump is intended to improve fuel injection.

The new engine is paired with a revised Optidriver gearbox, which Renault Trucks says uses updated control software and optimised shift strategies. Gear changes are claimed to be up to 20% faster than on the previous generation, while the DE13 R is also fitted as standard with Optibrake+, a more powerful engine brake designed to improve control, particularly on hilly routes.

The update also includes several fuel-saving systems. Optivision+ uses terrain data and road sign information to adapt gear shifting, acceleration and vehicle speed to the route ahead. A predictive engine stop-start function can switch off the engine when appropriate, while aerodynamic changes are also intended to reduce drag.

Renault Trucks says the Smart Racer specification brings together the full set of energy-saving features, including improved aerodynamics, Optivision+, low rolling-resistance tyres and predictive powertrain control.

Depending on use, the manufacturer claims the new generation of vehicles can reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by up to 4% compared with the previous generation. The company also says the new powertrain remains compatible with HVO and B100 renewable fuels.

Renault Trucks presented the update as part of a broader transition strategy, arguing that improvements to combustion-engine vehicles still have a role alongside the expansion of electric trucks.

“The decarbonisation of road transport relies on several complementary levers. Alongside the acceleration of the development of our electric offer, we continue to improve the energy efficiency of our combustion-engine vehicles in order to help our customers reduce their fuel consumption, CO₂ emissions and total cost of ownership from today,” said Antoine Duclaux, President of Renault Trucks.

The updated powertrain will be introduced with the 2027 model year.
