Spain has been attacked by winter snow in recent days. Today, the situation appears to have worsened due to the Filomena snowstorm; over 100 road sections are currently closed to trucks.
In response to the traffic difficulties caused by the snow, the Spanish General Directorate of Road Traffic (DGT) have published information on what sections of roads are closed due to the difficult weather conditions.
At the time of writing, there are black, red and yellow alerts on approximately 110 road sections, which means truck traffic is prohibited. To find out the latest situation on roads in Spain where you are, visit the DGT website.
In the link above you’ll see a map, which uses a colour coded system to describe the restrictions on each road. The colours mean as follows:
- Green – it’s just starting to rain. Trucks are only required to move to the right lane. You can drive on motorways at a maximum speed of 100 km/h, and 80 km/h on national roads. Mountain passes should be avoided.
- Yellow – road surface is partially covered with snow; a driving ban for trucks applies.
- Red – road surface is completely covered with snow; a driving ban for trucks applies.
- Black – road is closed.
Snowfall also expected at the weekend
The tough conditions could also continue into the weekend. As reported by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), Filomena will bring extensive snowfall, strong winds and very intense rainfall throughout the country, which will continue until Sunday.
Weather forecast suggests that the heaviest snowfall will be on Friday and Saturday. In the central and eastern regions of Spain, even more than half a meter of snow could fall.
