The Swedish Transport Administration is taking steps to prevent the misuse of rest areas – especially those incidents when hauliers leave their trailers parked there for long periods. Operations are to take place in some rest areas between the 1st and 6th of June.

Using rest areas as long-term parking places for trailers is a misuse of public space, and it prevents others who need it to take a break as drivers’ hours’ regulations and thus affects road safety, claims the authority.

Therefore, the Swedish Transport Administration will take steps to clarify the applicable regulations.

We are reviewing the parking regulations that apply at the site to prevent people from parking up their vehicles for longer periods. We are also considering the possibility of having some form of camera surveillance on-site, and that particular effort is part of the national pilot project”, quotes trailer.se Louise Linderoth, action planner at the Swedish Transport Administration.

The road transport website trailer.se adds that hauliers that use the rest area as a parking space for trailers have become commonplace at the rest area E6 in Landskrona, Glumslöv.

This rest area is misused. Some hauliers set up their trailers for long periods. That is not at all the purpose of our rest areas”, adds Linderoth.

Works will take place between the 1st and 6th of June. During this time, the rest area shall be closed but the facilities will stay open.
