Tesla had previously confirmed that it would use IAA Transportation to present the European Semi and disclose further launch details. As Trans.iNFO reported in August, Tesla’s UK website was already showing a Standard Range configuration with approximately 550 km of range, consumption of 1.0 kWh/km and a 40-tonne gross combination weight.
What has now changed is the timetable. Tesla’s European press material, read by Electrive, states that customer deliveries will start in 2027, moving the project beyond the repeated statements of intent that have accompanied the Semi’s European development in recent years.
For now, Tesla is presenting only the Standard Range version for Europe. The tractor uses three independent motors on its two driven rear axles, producing up to 800 kW, while an electric power take-off can provide up to 25 kW. Tesla lists the tractor’s kerb weight at below 9,100 kg.
That figure may prove particularly significant for operators. Electrive calculates that, depending on trailer weight and whether the normal 40-tonne limit or the additional weight allowance available to zero-emission trucks is used, the Semi could offer roughly 24.6 to 26.6 tonnes of payload. That suggests Tesla has prioritised payload over maximum battery capacity for its first European configuration.
550 km range comes with important conditions
Tesla’s claimed 550 km range and 1.0 kWh/km consumption are based on a 40-tonne combination travelling at 80 km/h in 20°C conditions on flat terrain.
The test configuration also uses an aerodynamic kit and a dry-van trailer built to California specifications. Tesla itself notes that tyres, roof fairings and trailer configuration can have a substantial effect on consumption.
The 550 km figure therefore does not put the Semi at the top of Europe’s electric long-haul range table. Trucks already announced by established European manufacturers reach further on paper, including the Volvo FH Aero Electric with up to around 700 km.
Tesla’s approach appears instead to balance range against vehicle weight, while relying heavily on high-power charging to extend daily utilisation.
Up to 800 kW charging
The European Semi will use the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) and support charging at up to 800 kW. Tesla claims drivers will be able to recover up to 60% of the truck’s range in 30 minutes, potentially allowing charging to be incorporated into statutory driver breaks on suitable operations.
The manufacturer also says it intends to build an expanding European Semi charging network. Alongside high-powered Megachargers, Tesla is expected to offer lower-powered charging for longer depot and overnight stops.
Charging infrastructure will be only part of the European rollout. Tesla says it plans dedicated Semi Service Centres, mobile servicing and Tesla-certified repair workshops, with spare parts stocked at distribution centres to reduce downtime.
Fleet customers will also gain access to Tesla’s fleet-management platform, including vehicle status, charging information, energy consumption and service functions.
The Semi will be shown at IAA Transportation in Hannover, where Tesla is also offering demonstration rides. The truck’s appearance follows its 2024 IAA outing, when Tesla showed a European-compatible prototype but stopped short of committing to a commercial launch date.
With deliveries now scheduled for 2027, the next questions for European hauliers will be pricing, which markets receive the truck first, and how quickly Tesla can build the charging and service network needed to support it.
