A man carrying out maintenance on France’s A6 motorway was airlifted to hospital yesterday after suffering serious injuries as a result of being hit by a loose tyre from a truck.

According to multiple reports in the French media, the horrific accident occurred near Romanèche-Thorins (in the direction of Paris-Lyon) yesterday morning.

A Normandy-based haulier’s HGV shed one of its tyres, which then travelled some 600 metres down the motorway before hitting one of the APRR motorway maintenance staff. To make matters worse, the tyre hit the man in his face, causing serious injuries.

Traffic had to be completely stopped in the Paris-Lyon direction to allow a helicopter to land to evacuate the victim. The man was transported immediately to the Lyon Edouard-Herriot hospital.

Two of the man’s colleagues were also cared for by the emergency services as result of the extreme shock caused by the accident.

An investigation has already been launched to find the cause of the accident.
