The cost for cars will go from £1.90 to £2.20 and for HGVs it will rise from £3.90 to £4.40, according to the decision reported by local paper The Northern Echo.
Although the council decided on the toll increase, it has postponed the introduction of the higher charges from February to May due to the already high cost of living.
However, the toll increase is very much needed, according to the tunnel operator TT2, whose representative said at the council’s meeting that operating costs had skyrocketed with electricity bills rising by £1m and the higher tolls are needed to pay back the debt incurred by building the second tunnel, Northern Echo’s report adds.
