Following an investigation sparked by video footage uploaded to social media, the Spanish Civil Guard have proposed that a van driver who pointed a laser pen at a HGV be fined €30,000.

The incident occurred on the evening of November 11th on the AP-2 toll road between Zaragoza and Barcelona. As the video below shows, the driver of the van pointed a green laser at the HGV behind him on more than one occasion.

The video footage also makes it clear (in case it wasn’t already obvious) how the laser would obstruct the vision of those driving behind the van, potentially causing a serious accident in the process.

Multiple Spanish media outlets state that the Civil Guard have submitted a report to authorities in Lleida recommending that the driver be fined €30,000 for a „serious violation of the law”.

Since news of the proposed penalty emerged yesterday evening, Spanish social media users have expressed different opinions as to whether the five-figure fine would be the right punishment. However, most commented that stripping the driver of his licence would be the most important outcome.
