Volvo Group and Daimler Trucks have signed a binding agreement to establish a joint venture based in Gothenburg in 2025 to develop a software-defined vehicle platform for future commercial vehicles.

Volvo Group and Daimler Truck have signed a binding agreement to establish a joint venture to develop a software-defined vehicle platform and a dedicated truck operating system. The companies announced that, pending regulatory approval, the venture is expected to begin operations in the first half of 2025.

This platform will serve as a foundation for future software-defined commercial vehicles, enabling Volvo Group, Daimler Truck, and other potential customers to provide independent digital functionalities for their products.

The joint venture will focus on creating high-performance, centralised control units capable of processing large volumes of data specific to commercial vehicles.

It will also develop tools and an operating system to facilitate the wireless, over-the-air installation and updating of digital applications.

Despite collaborating on this platform, Volvo Group and Daimler Truck have stated they will maintain their competitive market positions and continue to differentiate their products, services, and digital solutions.
