According to the draft regulation “Greening Corporate Fleets,” companies – including transport operators – would be required to purchase a certain percentage of electric or hydrogen-powered trucks. The initiative aims to boost sales of zero-emission vehicles produced by European manufacturers.
IRU warns that the proposal is premature and potentially damaging for the road transport sector. The organisation argues that decarbonisation is already progressing, but at a pace that reflects the real financial and infrastructure capacity of companies – and should not be forced by regulation.
IRU: support is needed, not compulsion
“The road transport industry neither needs nor wants such a mandate,” IRU states. The organisation warns that compulsory ZEV purchases could cause serious financial and operational difficulties, particularly for small and medium-sized firms without charging or maintenance facilities.
“Decarbonisation is a natural process that follows the development of infrastructure, incentives, and accessible technologies. Forcing carriers to buy vehicles that are not yet economically viable could harm the entire transport ecosystem,” IRU says.
Who can sign the petition
IRU invites all organisations involved in goods transport to sign the petition, including:
- road carriers
- freight forwarders and logistics operators
- manufacturers and distributors
- industry associations
Only one person may sign on behalf of each company.
The petition will be submitted to Brussels in November. IRU calls on as many businesses as possible to send a clear message to EU decision-makers: the sector supports the green transition, but rejects mandatory measures.
