The Lithuanian transport giant will invest over €900,000 in a technology project to be developed jointly with Vilnius University. Its aim is to create advanced technology that will allow the company to better manage its fleet.
The Girteka’s project will focus mainly on increasing the efficiency of trucks that operate on routes within the European Union. The cooperation of the Lithuanian operator with Vilnius University will not only consists of truck management but also in the optimization of semi-trailer management. At present, the Girteka fleet consists of 6,000 tractors and 6,500 semi-trailers.
The main objective of the research work of university researchers and transport experts is to create an algorithm that will enable real-time management of the entire Girteka fleet on European roads. This algorithm must be modified to manage such a large amount of data.
Our goal is to create a technology that optimizes transport management and selects the most suitable truck and semi-trailer for each load,” says Ramūnas Mikalauskas, Director of Technology and Innovation at Girteka Logistics.
“This is a major challenge, not only because of the different parameters to be taken into account but also because of the size of the fleet. However, it is the size of our fleet that makes us believe that this investment will be productive. We hope to develop a solution that will make our operations even more efficient,” adds Mikalauskas.
Girteka will allocate over €500,000 to create the algorithm, another €400,000 will come from the European Regional Development Fund. According to the company’s plans, the solution is to be developed within 2 years.
7,500 transportations every week
Every week Girteka Logistics carries out about 7,500 transportations. Each transportation must be assigned to a truck. This is done by taking into account different parameters such as truck type, load weight, engine power, licenses of the driver, etc. This is the only way to carry out transport operations in different EU countries in accordance with EU and national regulations.
