Serbia has set up disinfection points at the Röszke–Horgoš border crossing, the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture announced on 4 April. According to the statement, all lorries and passenger vehicles arriving from Hungary are being directed to disinfection barriers, where they are sprayed using manual or mechanical equipment. In addition, special checkpoints have been established to allow for more thorough disinfection of vehicles.
The ministry stressed that increased biosecurity measures had been put in place due to the spread of FMD in Hungary and Slovakia and the high risk of the disease entering Serbia.
Foot-and-mouth disease has not been reported in Serbia to date. The import of cattle, pigs, sheep and goats, as well as products of animal origin — including food containing animal-derived ingredients intended for consumption by travellers — is prohibited from countries where the disease has been detected or where restrictions are in place.
Restrictions and disinfection at the Czech-Slovak border
The Czech Republic has also tightened its controls: from 4 April, vehicles over 3.5 tonnes may only enter from Slovakia at five designated border crossings:
- Lanžhot–Brodské,
- Starý Hrozenkov–Drietoma,
- Bílá–Bumbálka–Makov,
- Mosty u Jablunkova–Svrčinovec,
- Hodonín–Holič.
All lorries are subject to disinfection, with vehicles transporting livestock, animal products or feed undergoing enhanced disinfection procedures.
