German discount supermarket Lidl is now handling some of its hinterland transport itself and has set up Tailwind Intermodal GmbH for this purpose. The sister company of the group’s own container shipping company, Tailwind Shipping Line, is based in Werndorf near Graz, Austria.

According to Tailwind Intermodal, it will organise and coordinate the onward transport of goods arriving at the Slovenian seaport of Koper on the container shipping company’s own vessels.

The container port of Koper is currently the most strategically important port for Tailwind Shipping Lines. Its ships bring goods from China to Koper on the Panda Express liner service. The new sister company will be responsible for further inland transport and the return of empty containers.
