During a road traffic inspection on Germany's A70 motorway last Thursday, a 42-year-old truck driver was found to have driven for over 21 hours in less than a day - an obvious breach of drivers' hours rules. He was fined €700 as a result. Meanwhile, a day later on the A3 motorway near Erlangen, a truck bound for Manchester with a severe technical fault and drivers' hours violations was also detected.

In the first of these cases, the police discovered a massive drivers’ hours violation after studying the truck’s tachograph data. It turned out the trucker had driven for 21 hours and 15 minutes in a 24-hour period.

The driver was forbidden from continuing his journey and was ordered to immediately take a daily rest period of at least eleven hours. He was also fined €700.

The second of the aforementioned trucks was inspected during a road transport check on the A3 motorway near Erlangen on Friday. The vehicle, which was on its way to Manchester with 22 tons of fresh melons, was found to have a torn brake disc.

After checking the tachograph, the police also discovered that the driver of the vehicle “had massively violated the driving and rest times”.

The police said that daily rest periods had not been observed, while weekly rest periods had been shortened for several months. As a result, both the driver and his employer face 5-digit fines.
