The bridge will remain open throughout, but traffic will be restricted to single-lane running on selected nights.

National Highways has confirmed the following overnight lane closures:

  • Mon 17 – Wed 19 November: Westbound lane closed
  • Thu 20 – Fri 21 November: Lane closures in both directions
  • Mon 24 – Thu 27 November: Westbound lane closed

These restrictions follow the replacement of two westbound expansion joints carried out between June and August. The main programme finished ahead of schedule on 1 August, but National Highways says additional tasks still need to be completed.

£6 million maintenance project

According to information provided to the BBC, the works form part of a £6m project to replace the westbound expansion joints, which allow the bridge to flex and move safely. National Highways also said it plans to replace the eastbound expansion joints at a later stage, although no timetable has been announced.

Bridge stays open but delays possible

The Orwell Bridge carries the A14 over the River Orwell south of Ipswich and is a key route for freight traffic. While the bridge will not be fully closed during this phase, drivers should expect:

  • Reduced capacity during overnight hours
  • Slower traffic in the approach to the bridge
  • Possible queueing at evening peaks

Why closures and restrictions occur

National Highways notes that major structures require regular maintenance, some of which may not be visible to drivers. Repairs beneath the road surface or materials needing time to cure can also lead to temporary restrictions.

The bridge is additionally subject to wind-related controls:

  • A 40mph limit is imposed when winds are forecast above 50mph
  • The bridge is closed entirely if winds reach 60mph or more
  • A normal 60mph limit remains in place during low winds
