The adoption of e-CMR marks a significant shift from traditional paper-based documentation to a fully digital system, which is expected to enhance the efficiency and safety of freight transport across Austria and its neighbouring countries. Austria is the second country this year, after Italy, to implement this system.

The e-CMR protocol offers several advantages, including the elimination of paperwork, which reduces handling costs and administrative delays. Additionally, it improves accuracy in tracing shipments, providing real-time access to pick-up and delivery information, which enhances overall transparency and security within the logistics chain.

The International Road Transport Union (IRU) has welcomed Austria’s move and will continue to advocate for the widespread adoption of e-CMR, highlighting its potential to improve the speed, efficiency, and security of global trade and logistics.
