In the last few years, officers across Great Britain have used unmarked HGVs in actions such as Operation Tramline and Operation Vertebrae, which have seen thousands of motorists fined for various infringements.
Some drivers have been seen watching Netflix on the road, while there have even been reports of individual drivers rolling a cigarette or eating a bowl of cereal behind the wheel.
“Mobile phone use while driving is one of the main forms of distraction and significantly increases the risk of accidents. From the truck, patrols have a better view of what motorists are doing while driving,” says the Belgian Federal Police.
According to nieuwsblad.be, the IVECO HGV in the photograph above is being used by road police on a stretch of the E40 near the coast.
Although the truck is not completely unmarked, it lacks the livery typically used by the Belgian police. Therefore, a number of motorists will likely be unaware they are being watched by officers.
