The theft, which was reported in a cycling industry website, occurred last Thursday at Fleet Services’ “secure lorry park”, which is equipped with CCTV and ANPR. The 40-foot container, which had been picked up at the Port of Southampton port, was raided by thieves, who cut through the container’s locks and escaped with 133 bikes.

The bicycle manufacturer says its driver was not hurt, had followed procedure and provided as much evidence as possible to the police.

The company’s logistics partner is said to be cooperating with the operator of the lorry park to aid the investigation into the theft.

Merida ruled out the possibility of their being an inside job, saying the thieves could not have known about the contents of the container.
