The Czechs are taking further steps to limit the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. Trucks can now only cross the border at certain crossings.

The Czechs have already introduced a series of restrictions in response to the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the past week. Since 26 March, only four major border crossings between the Czech Republic and Slovakia have remained open to heavy goods vehicles weighing over 3.5 tonnes. Yesterday, they restricted the movement of such vehicles across the Czech-Austrian border.

From 31 March, all trucks weighing over 3.5 tonnes must use only the following border crossings for disinfection:

  • Drasenhofen / Mikulov
  • Kleinhaugsdorf / Hatě
  • Gmund / Halámky

“The interpretation of the current FMD regulations by the Czech authorities at the borders regarding whether animals or animal products [may] be transported by truck is extremely strict! This means that even in the case of an empty journey to the Czech Republic, it can currently be assumed that the truck has somehow travelled through a contaminated area or region, had contact with contaminated soil, etc. etc.,” reports the Austrian Economic Chamber.

Information about the restrictions introduced last week in other countries can be found in our article on this topic.
