The new speed limit will apply to two-way streets that are not divided by a traffic barrier. According to the assurances of the French government, it is not about fines but about road safety.

On French roads managed by departments, marked with the letter „D” or possibly „RD” (equivalent to provincial roads), the speed limit will be reduced from 90 to 80 km/h – said in January this year, the French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe.

This change applies to a total of 400 thousand kilometers of roads and will enter into force on 1 July 2018.

Reasons for the decision to change the speed limit

The reason for Philippe’s decision to lower the speed limit is the number of fatal road accidents, which has been growing since 2013. The Prime Minister of France is aware of a wave of criticism against the new law, but he is willing to take the risk „because he wants and can save the lives of many people in this way” – states Philippe for the French daily „Le Figaro.”

I do not do it to increase the state’s revenues – said the head of the French government.

The effects of lowering the speed limit

Although the prime minister has a noble goal, representatives of the transport industry warn that lowering the limit will contribute to increased transport costs. In turn, the inhabitants of the villages complain about limited mobility. Edouard, however, refutes the allegations.

This limit, on a 40-kilometer route, will extend the driving time by just 3 minutes. Are we not able to spend three extra minutes a day to save someone’s life? – the French Prime Minister asks.
