From May 1 to October 31, French services will carry out border controls. Gendarmes and police in the border areas will also join to inspect large vehicles in which illegal immigrants can hide.

The French Ministry of the Interior confirmed that from May 1 for a period of six months additional checks at the border will apply. The Government refers to the provision contained in Regulation No. 562/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 15 March 2006. This regulation establishes a Community code of rules governing the movement of persons across borders (the Schengen Borders Code).

After a proven terrorist threat, the government may decide to reintroduce border control for security purposes. The Schengen Borders Code provides for this. Considering the number of thwarted and recent attacks – including in Trèbes – taking place on French territory, the government decided to resume control for a period of six months from May 1″ – comments for Trans.INFO Sophie Dulibeau, press advisor responsible for communication with Gérard Collomb, minister of internal affairs.

Gendarmes will join in the fight against illegal immigration

In addition to border guards, two squadrons of gendarmerie in cooperation with the PAF (border police), engage in the fight against illegal immigration. The French portal GendInfo states that on the border with Italy mobile gendarmes control traffic and rail. The chances of crossing the border illegally are small especially in Manton, Fanghetto, and Saint-Ludovic, where the controls are extremely strict.

All vehicles from Italy are controlled. In particular, we check tourist coaches and other large vehicles that potentially carry people. In case of any doubts we carry out more detailed inspections” – says Major Patrice Rey, head of the unit at Saint-Ludovic.
