Police in Germany have pleaded for motorists to contact them if they may have seen a dark-blue VW Golf on the A5 between Grünberg junction and the Finkenwald rest area on Saturday evening. The two men in the car had a siren on the roof and pretended to be plain-clothed police officers. The thieves successfully pulled over a trucker into the nearest parking area before gaining access to his cab and stealing a laptop, cards and cash.

According to the official police report, the man in the passenger seat of the VW Golf lowered his window when alongside a truck. He then made hand gestures to suggest the 50-year-old trucker should follow him.

Arriving at the nearest parking area, the driver of VW Golf introduced himself as a plain-clothed police officer in order to gain access to the lorry’s driver’s cab. The fake officer claimed that the truck had been pulled over due to the vehicle having faulty lights.

While this discussion was ongoing, the second man entered the lorry cabin and stole a laptop bag containing bank cards as well as two boxes of cash.

After someone at the parking area intervened by shouting at the impersonating officers, the two thieves bolted back into their car and drove away with the loot.

The police are now trying to track down the two criminals. The driver of the Golf is said to be 175 cm tall and 35-40 years old. He had dark hair, a normal build, and, according to witnesses, a more “southern” appearance. The passenger was 170 to 180 cm tall and 20 to 25 years old. He had a narrow face and was described as slim with a “Central European” appearance. Both spoke without an accent, and wore jeans and blue jackets.

Those who have seen the two men or their vehicle have been encouraged to call the local police force via (06033) 7043-5010.
