International Road Transport Union (IRU) puts forward the assumption of endangering the health of international HGV drivers while exposure to X-ray scanners installed for security at border crossings to detect illegal goods.

When it comes to the risk involved, the IRU’s Goods Transport Council has highlighted the need for carrying out regular inspections of border scanning devices in order to eliminate the suspision of the negative effect that it has on drivers’ health.

Meanwhile, the Freight Transport Association (FTA) is arguing that the level of exposure to X-ray is minimal and insufficient to be of any harm.  It is also pointing at the fact of the drivers leaving the cab while it is being scanned. Nevertheless, the drivers’ health condition remains to be the highest priority.
