During a recent interview with French newspaper Ouest France, La Poste CEO Philippe Wahl revealed some key facts and figures, as well as some hints concerning the postal operator’s future plans.

Wahl was quoted mentioning numerous stats about La Poste’s current operations, including the following:

  • mail will only have a 16% of the company’s turnover come the end of the year
  • by comparison, domestic and international parcels represent 52% of the group’s turnover
  • 6 billion letters were delivered by La Poste last year, down from 18 billion in 2008
  • by 2030, the company expects to be delivering just 3 billion letters per year
  • La Poste has already delivered 5 million meals to elderly persons this year; Wahl believes this number will rise noticeably in the future
  • the company’s new red e-stamp service is being used 6,700 times per day
  • La Poste has 125,000 mailboxes in France, Wahl says this is the densest network in Europe
  • only 1.2% of postboxes were decommissioned in 2022, and Whal says “several thousand are left empty most of the time”
  • the proportion of failed home deliveries has dropped from 9% in 2015 to under 2% today
  • La Poste’s network of access points has surpassed 17,000

Regarding strategy, the La Poste CEO repeatedly referred to how the company aims to use its ability to mix physical means of communication with digital tools and technology.

As an example, he referred to the company’s service that allows digital messages to be sent to La Poste before being posted to their intended recipients. Another area of growth Wahl touched on was medicine delivery, while the CEO also revealed that La Poste would continue to ramp up its zero-emission fleet.
