A lorry driver took the wrong junction in South Wales and drove more than two miles in the wrong direction on the A470 carriageway between Coryton and Taff Wells in South Wales. The driver says he was forced to do so.

In the early hours of Thursday, 22 July, a lorry driver was seen travelling in the wrong direction of the A470 carriageway in Wales; he was driving north in the south-bound lane.

Although the driver travelled nearly 2 miles in the wrong direction, luckily he realised he wasn’t in the right place and stopped in a layby with an emergency telephone, a spokesman for South Wales Police explained to swd.media.

Police assisted to help turn the vehicle turn in the correct direction before allowing the driver to continue his journey.

According to the lorry driver’s explanation, he had to take an “evasive action” when joining the A470 from the M4 motorway and that was how he ended up on the wrong side of the central reservation.

One internet user has speculated that the driver may have come from Cwmbran M4 and took the wrong side of the slip road onto A470, which “is possible from Cardiff end as it is slip road and a one-way road.”

Nobody was injured as a result of the incident, which has sparked a degree speculation and debate online.

Despite the police appearing to indicate that the HGV driver had done the right thing in the circumstances, some internet users have called for the trucker’s licence to be taken away.

One YouTube user also claimed driver error was likely to blame:

It’s at Coryton roundabout, Junction 32 of the M4. You come off the M4 there is a slip road through the roundabout with traffic lights to immediately join the A470 northbound, I can see how it would have happened – but more likely to be driver error than avoidance action, as if the driver had to swerve to avoid something – why continue up when he could have stopped and reversed where he was? More likely wasn’t paying attention to the signage and went the wrong way, turned too far right at the lights instead of following the road markings onto the northbound side.
