Maersk will deploy its first electric truck to its United Kingdom network in Q3 2023 and will be looking at adding more the late 2023 and 2024, the company has announced at the Birmingham Multimodal Fair.

The HGV will be owned and operated by Swain Group on the Maersk Landside network.

Maersk’s long-term goal in the United Kingdom and Ireland is to move toward a fully electric trucking fleet to offer customers an environmentally friendly alternative for short-haul trucking, the company reveals in a press release.

The initial lorry is the FM Electric manufactured by Volvo Truck: “with its low noise level and zero exhaust gases, the flexible and agile Volvo FM Electric can perform high capacity deliveries in urban city areas with less environmental impact. Potentially also in zero-emission zones or at hours of the day not accessible for diesel trucks,” the press release reads.

“We are delighted to be partnering with Swain on this significant step forward to delivering sustainable supply chain solutions to customers in the UK and Irish markets,” Gary Jeffreys, Managing Director for Maersk UK & Ireland says. “Combining Landside solutions with the soon-to-be-delivered vessels running on green methanol will allow us to start offering green end-to-end solutions for our customers and this will be the first of many initiatives to get us to net zero.”

Matthew Deer, Swain Group Managing Director adds:

“As a Group, we are committed to developing transport solutions for our customers that can help them deliver on their environmental and sustainability objectives. Our primary goal is that we will achieve net-zero carbon by 2040. We will do this through incremental improvements in driver training, telematics, to improve vehicle efficiency. We are always searching for sustainable solutions. Today, we are proud to introduce an electric, zero-emission truck, a significant milestone that signals more changes to come across the industry.”

EV Cargo acquires 10 Volvo FH tractors

EV Cargo has purchased ten new Volvo FH with I-Save 6×2 tractors to accelerate its carbon reduction targets, the news was also announced at the Birmingham Multimodal Fair.

The new arrivals are the first Volvos delivered to the company’s Ashby de la Zouch depot in Leicestershire in more than two decades.

The new lorries are powered by Euro 6-compliant D13TC Step E engines, producing 460 hp and a peak torque of 2,600 Nm. The turbo compound technology adds an extra turbine after the turbocharger to reuse excess energy from the exhausts. This energy is then converted to torque directly on the crankshaft, providing a powerful and extremely fuel-efficient engine.

The vehicles are expected to clock-up around 160,000 km a year.
