The NDR consumer editorial team examined the stretch of motorway between Göttingen and the Kirchheim Triangle, also known as the “Kasseler Berge.” On this section of the A7, a total of 33 truck fires were recorded from January 2023 to mid-August 2025. The Hessian Ministry of the Interior confirmed upon request that in 27 of these cases, a MAN truck was involved.
As these vehicles also operate as tankers or hazardous goods transporters, the risk to drivers, emergency services, and following traffic is significantly increased.
Recall by the Federal Motor Transport Authority
In 2024, the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) classified the situation as a “serious risk” and ordered a recall. This concerned the replacement of oil filter components and caps, as well as shortened oil change intervals. Worldwide, over 37,000 vehicles are affected, about 12,700 of them in Germany.
According to MAN, the measures have been implemented in more than 90 percent of the vehicles. Nevertheless, fires continue to occur.
MAN Points to rare isolated cases
MAN told NDR that these are “rare isolated cases” and possible maintenance deficiencies. Fires occur “very rarely” in the overall fleet. MAN emphasizes that it is continuously working to further reduce the likelihood of incidents.
Background: 2024 recall campaign
In July 2024, MAN had already recalled around 120,000 trucks and 5,000 buses across Europe with D26 engines of the Euro-6c standard. The company admitted at the time that there had been 170 fires up to that point, 18 in 2024 alone. The cause was sensitive lead-free bearings that could lead to engine damage and subsequently fires due to irregular oil changes and high mileage.

Current inspection by authorities
According to NDR information, the KBA is currently examining whether the previous recall measures are sufficient to ensure the safety of drivers and road users in Germany.
As reported by NDR, entrepreneurs with a MAN vehicle fleet complain of massive financial damage, drivers describe life-threatening situations, and fire brigade crews report difficult and risky operations on the motorways.
