Port of Antwerp to phase in biometric container identification system to ease pressure

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium has announced the gradual introduction of a biometric container collection system called Certified Pick-up (CPu). While some carriers have already switched to CPu at designated terminals as planned on 15 January 2024, others will follow suit gradually over the coming weeks.

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges added that the decision was taken in consultation with terminals, shipping agents, transport companies and other stakeholders in order to spread the pressure on users and ensure the performance of the system.

The exceptional pressure on the platform in recent days has led the port to the development of a phased approach.

From 15 January, part of the container volumes will have to be collected via Certified Pick up as planned.

For those carrier/terminal combinations where CPu is not yet live, the carrier will have to follow the guidelines of the carrier and the terminal.

The next phases of this launch will follow soon and will be announced in the news section of certifiedpickup.eu.

“It remains very important that all parties involved register on the Cpu platform as soon as possible. First Release Parties (forwarder, consignee or cargo stakeholder) must accept containers and pass on the release right. Transport Operators must accept the release right and link the truck driver’s Alfapass or company identity to the containers. Customs must also give the green light. The container can then be picked up based on (company) identity, ” the operator of the port warns.
