According to a recent report published by Le Echo, the Port of Dunkirk is making substantial investments to strengthen its rail connections and solidify its position as a key hub in multimodal transportation.
The port has allocated €11 million for the development of a new dry port facility which will be equipped with four 850-meter-long railway tracks designed to facilitate efficient container transport.
The primary objective of this investment is to increase the portion of container transportation handled through rail services.
Of significant note is the Port’s commitment to enhancing its integrated rail transport services, particularly in partnership with the Grand Est region. As part of this commitment, the Port has set a goal to have 21% of all containers transported by rail by the year 2035.
As part of its growth strategy, the port is planning the expansion of its service offerings. This includes the construction of a piggyback terminal, which is expected to provide access to new destinations and further enhance the Port’s service capabilities, located in the western section of the port.
Additionally, the article by Le Echo anticipates a substantial increase in river traffic in the foreseeable future, primarily attributed to the impending inauguration of the Seine-Nord canal. This waterway project is to generate an annual cargo volume of 2.5 million tonnes.
