Citing „people familiar with the decision”, the American business daily said that Shell suspended its Red Sea operations last week due to fears of further attacks on ships and an escalating situation in the area.

The WSJ adds that a Shell tanker was the victim of a drone attack last month.

The British oil giant has yet to comment on the news of the suspension.

Houthi attacks on Western ships in the Red Sea have severely disrupted supply chains, as the Red Sea is a popular route for Asia-Europe shipping. Most shipping lines, including Maersk and CMA CGM, and many oil tankers, such as those of BP or Qatar Energy, have now decided to suspend shipping through the area.
