The 4×2 vehicles, each expected to cover around 200,000 kilometres annually, will distribute food and goods to Tesco stores across Scotland. According to IVECO, the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles could save up to 6,473 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year across the fleet when compared with diesel models.
The trucks are powered by the new xCursor13 CNG engine, which delivers 500 horsepower. When operating on biomethane, the vehicles can reduce CO₂ emissions by as much as 95% compared to diesel equivalents. Additional features include mirror cameras to reduce drag and improve visibility, as well as a driver-focused cab design with a digital display and 10-inch infotainment system.
To support the operation, Tesco has worked with CNG Fuels to establish a refuelling station next to its Livingston Regional Distribution Centre, enabling drivers to refuel on-site in a similar way to diesel vehicles.
Cliff Smith, Fleet Engineering Manager at Tesco, said:
“These vehicles represent a significant step towards our goal of reducing emissions and achieving carbon neutrality in our operations by 2035. By investing in biomethane technology and partnering with IVECO and CNG Fuels, we are committed to driving positive change and pioneering sustainable practices in the retail sector.”
