Traffic bans for trucks on Spanish roads. Truckers will have to use paid motorways

The Catalans introduced a traffic ban for heavy goods vehicles on two roads in four provinces. Trucks have to use motorways instead and pay tolls.

In the provinces of Tarragona, Barcelona, Castellón, and Lleida from September this year truck traffic will be redirected from the N240 and N340 roads to toll roads – AP-7 and AP-2. The ban applies to trucks with 4 or more axles. It applies on section N 340 between Alcañiz and Hospitalet de L’Infant and between Altafulla and Villafranca del Penedés. At N240 turn between Borges Blanques and Montblanc.

As the Spanish federation of Fenadismer transport associations informs, the restriction does not apply to:

– transports whose purpose or commencement takes place in towns on the route covered by the prohibition,

– the use of the road to reach the place of legal residence to take a rest or repair the vehicle, provided that the driver minimizes the route as much as possible and returns the same route.

As emphasized by the Spanish media, this solution is primarily aimed at improving the safety and flow of traffic on national roads.
