Lithuanian logistics operator Girteka wants to reduce its contribution to CO2 emissions by expanding the intermodal network. The company invests in rail freight transport as part of its commitment to sustainable development.
Rail freight transport is to be an integral part of the operator’s long-term strategy. This is one of the most environmentally friendly ways of transporting cargo over long distances.
We invest more in technological innovation and sustainability because we see that this is the future of the transport industry. Environmentally friendly transport of goods is important for us, our customers and our society,” said Larisa Senkevičienė, head of intermodal services at Girteka Logistics.
The Lithuanian giant stresses that rail transport and shipping can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 75%. Last year, thanks to intermodal transport, the company reduced CO2 emissions by 2,500 tons.
The company transported a total of around 250 vehicles every week on eight fixed rail and ferry lines – between Italy and Germany, the UK and Spain, between France and Poland and between Spain and the Benelux, Germany, the UK and Poland. One of the most recent connections operated by Girteka semi-trailers is the route from Bettembourg in Luxembourg to Poznań in Poland.
The number of such connections is expected to increase in the future.
Extending our intermodal map is one of the steps to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. We are aware that we are raising the bar for the whole transport industry and we do not intend to change that,” says Larisa Senkevičienė.
