As of 1st January 2021, all road vehicles in Brussels will be able to drive at a maximum speed of 30 km/h. The new rules are aimed at improving the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.
Elke Van den Brandt, the Belgian Minister of Mobility, announced the plan to make the entire capital of Belgium a 30 km/h zone in November of 2019. Its purpose is to increase the security of unprotected both pedestrians and cyclists.
There are nonetheless a few exceptions to the changes; the main access roads should have a limit of 50 km/h, and on selected routes the maximum speed will be between 70 and 90 km/h. All the details can be checked on this interactive map.
The speed limit of 30 km/h already applies in many parts of the city centre. Even so, every third driver breaks the rules, which is why the police are reportedly planning to take more punitive measures measures against those who speed in 2021.
