It is said that the trigger for introducing an HGV ban was the recent accident in which a Home Bargains Lorry almost crashed into a thatched cottage.

According to the Salisbury Journal, “concerns were raised about the suitability of the A338 for HGV vehicles and how drivers could be discouraged from taking the countryside route.”

The local newspaper added that weight limits, road tolls, and restricting licenses of HGV firms who regularly break the speed limit, were all listed as possible deterrents.

The boss of a local removals firm was also quoted as saying that expanding the A345 to dual carriageway “may offer the best solution” for both hauliers and residents.
