The new service is expected to remove up to 100 long-haul lorry journeys a day from UK roads, which the company says will help reduce road congestion and contribute to improved carbon emissions and road safety.

“This new service allows greater flexibility for our customers,” the company stated. Julie Garn, Intermodal Director at GB Railfreight, commented on the initiative, saying, “We’re delighted to be re-introducing this new service to Daventry, increasing the ever-growing volumes and market share that we move from the Port of Felixstowe.” Garn added that following a pilot in October 2023 and a partnership with a proactive customer, GBRf is confident in establishing a long-term route.

Andrew Malcolm, CEO of W. H. Malcolm Limited, welcomed the new service, saying, “It is with great pleasure that we welcome a new daily intermodal service into our terminal from Felixstowe. We look forward to offering the customers that use this service a sustainable and robust terminal offering.”

The Port of Felixstowe, managed by Hutchison Ports, already operates more rail freight services than any other UK port.

“The new GB Railfreight service to Daventry further increases the options for shippers using the Port of Felixstowe to take carbon out of their supply chains,” said Paul Davey, Head of Corporate Affairs at Hutchison Ports.
