Iveco’s latest S-Way compressed natural gas tractor has completed a more than 1,000-kilometre test on a single refuelling, following a summer trial conducted by French journalists on a cross-border European route.

According to Iveco, journalists Fabien Calvet and Loïc Fieux drove the vehicle from the Belgian border to the Spanish border while towing a loaded Krone curtainsider. The gross combination weight of the vehicle and trailer was 30 tonnes.

During the test, the truck recorded average consumption below 21 kg of CNG per 100 km. Iveco says the tractor was equipped with new 620-litre tank packs, a total of 1,240 litres, providing capacity for at least 190 kg of compressed natural gas. This represents an 18% increase in on-board fuel storage compared to the previous generation.

The tested model used FPT Industrial’s xCursor 13 engine, which delivers 500 hp and 2,200 Nm of torque, paired with a second-generation ZF TraXon 12-speed automated gearbox. Iveco states that the powertrain is engineered to comply with forthcoming Euro VII emissions standards and is optimised to operate most efficiently between 1,000 and 1,500 rpm.

The manufacturer added that the truck incorporates several energy-saving technologies, including predictive GPS for managing energy recovery on descents and adjusting engine speed before climbs. Other features include a controlled alternator, a disengageable air compressor and a variable-flow steering pump.

Commenting on the result, Giandomenico Fioretti, Head of Alternative Propulsion Business Development at Iveco, said the test demonstrates the range and efficiency potential of the CNG S-Way. According to the company, Europe currently has around 4,300 biomethane LNG and 800 biomethane CNG refuelling stations, with a further 50 sites expected to open in 2026.

EU clears Iveco sale to Tata Motors

The planned sale of most of Iveco to Tata Motors has passed a key regulatory milestone, after the European Commission approved the transaction on 14 November. The competition authority concluded that the deal does not raise concerns due to the limited combined market position of the two groups and therefore handled the review under its simplified merger procedure. Iveco Defence is not included in the sale and is set to be acquired separately by Leonardo.

In parallel, Iveco reported its third-quarter 2025 results. The company said both divestment processes — the sale to Tata Motors and the Defence transfer to Leonardo — are progressing as expected. In its industrial vehicle division, Iveco stated that it focused on balancing pricing with market share, maintaining leadership in the LCV cab-chassis segment, and rolling out its Model Year 2024 updates.

For the quarter, the manufacturer recorded lower earnings year-on-year: consolidated EBIT reached €91 million, while consolidated net profit amounted to €16 million.
