The closure is part of essential works being carried out by National Highways in collaboration with Network Rail.

Eastbound closure and diversion

The eastbound carriageway will be closed between junction 18 (Simister Island) and junction 20 (Rochdale).

Traffic heading eastbound from the M60 or M66 will be diverted via the M60 from junction 18 to junction 21, where they will take the A663 northbound, then the A627 north to rejoin the M62 at junction 20.

Westbound closure and diversion

The westbound carriageway will be closed between junction 20 (Rochdale) and junction 19 (Heywood).

Drivers heading westbound will be diverted via the A627(M) southbound to the A664 Rochdale Road, heading west toward Middleton. From there, drivers will take the A6046 Hollin Lane northbound and rejoin the M62 at junction 19.

Alternative routes

Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and use alternative routes where possible. Recommended trans-Pennine routes include the A69 between Carlisle and Newcastle, the A66 from Penrith to Scotch Corner, and the Manchester to Sheffield route via the M67, A57, A628, and A616.
